Comfort Keepers & Holiday Stress in Colorado Springs, CO
Dec 22, 2017 by Glenn Savage
It's no secret that the holiday season often leads to excess stress. It is also no secret that many seniors have conditions that are aggravated by stress. Some, such as hypertension and heart disease, may even result in a holiday trip to the emergency room. To help seniors and their loved ones focus on enjoying each other and the wonders of the season while reducing holiday stress, Comfort Keepers would like to offer the following suggestions for this holiday season:
How Can Comfort Keepers Help With Holiday Stress in Colorado Springs, CO?
- Stick to routines as much as possible. Seniors, more than many others, have a hard time breaking from routine; and, in many cases, routines help keep seniors alive. Sleep, proper nutrition, exercise, and medication management are often quite scripted for seniors who face physical, emotional, or psychological problems. By sticking to established routines, seniors can avoid the anxiety and stress that results from fatigue and uncertainty.
- Physical activity often takes a back seat during the holidays. This often leads to increased stress levels since remaining active is an effective way to alleviate anxiety. Even a walk around the neighborhood or a short swim at the fitness center can decrease stress while elevating endorphin (chemicals that promote feelings of joy and happiness) levels in the body.
- Many seniors spend a fair amount of time alone. Being surrounded by family and friends can be great, but all the constant noise, questions, and other activity can also increase stress. Don't be afraid to take some time for yourself to clear the mind, relax, and breathe. We love our family, but sometimes listening to a song, getting a massage, or spending time with a hobby all by oneself is needed to maintain a healthy level of sanity. Spending time alone is not being selfish, it is showing wisdom.
It is possible to have a healthy, safe, and relatively stress-free holiday season. Research suggests that by sticking to routines, staying active, and spending some time alone, you and your family can greatly increase the odds that the time you do spend together will be happy, joyful, and focuses on the things that matter most: each other.
