It's January and time to make those New Year's resolutions! Polls show that most American adults actually make and try to stick to New Year's resolutions, however unsuccessful they usually end up. This year, make a resolution that is easy to accomplish and will have a tremendous benefit. Take a good look at your senior loved ones and see if they could use some support from an in-home caregiver.
Common signs that an aging family member may benefit from an in-home caregiver include:
Increased forgetfulness Poor hygiene Missed appointments
Loss of a driver's license Loneliness Signs of depression
A messy home Social isolation Frequent falls or injuries
Chronic pain Loss of mobility Lots of Different Medications
Truthfully, there is no one reason that a senior may benefit from senior care and there is no right or wrong reason for utilizing the services and support of a caregiver. What we do know is that over half of seniors over the age of 65 require assistance with at least one area of daily living and the percentage increases with age. Some seniors only need help a few hours a week, perhaps to tidy up the home or prepare meals. Others find local transportation services to be a lifesaver, while others enjoy the socialization and companionship. In more complex situations, seniors may require daily care or even 24-hour support and supervision.
Not all seniors need in-home care as the result of a long-term or progressive condition. Some seniors lack the family or social support to safely recover from an injury, illness, or medical procedure in their own home. Without a caregiver, these seniors need to spend time in a nursing home or convalescent facility.
Studies show that American seniors want to spend as much of their life in the comfort and security of their own home as possible. Sometimes, age-related, chronic, or progressive conditions make this hard or even impossible without support.
If your senior loved one shows signs that they could use some support with daily living activities or personal care, make it your resolution, this year, to consider the many benefits of an in-home caregiver. It's an easy resolution to keep, and it can add great value to the life of somebody you love.
